It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Dhamad Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Makkah Mukarramah and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) being harassed by boys who were following him. He said: O Muhammad! I treat madness. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied by reciting this sermon: “Indeed, all praise is due to Allah. We seek His help and His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of ourselves. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whomsoever He misguides, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”

Upon hearing these words, Dhamad requested: (Please) recite these words to me again. After hearing these words again, he said: I have heard and know poetry, divination, magic, and soothsaying, but I have never heard such purposeful and comprehensive words as these uttered by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) until today. These are words that reach the depths of the sea. I also bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant and Messenger of Allah. After reciting this testimony, he entered the fold of Islam.

When he became Muslim, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This acceptance of Islam and confession is on your behalf and on behalf of your people. He said: Yes, it is on my behalf and on behalf of my people. After this, a group of the noble Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by the people of Dhamad (may Allah be pleased with him) and took some of their belongings, such as utensils, etc. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These are the people of Dhamad; return their belongings to them. Thus, the noble Companions returned the looted belongings to those people.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The people of Makkah used to inflict severe physical and mental harm upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). People and children would follow behind him, calling him insane, and would trouble him. Sayyiduna Dhamad (radi Allahu anhu) also thought—Allah forbid—that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was insane. Thus, he came to treat him. However, in the face of the eloquence, clarity, wisdom, and sagacity of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), his treatment was rendered powerless.
