عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ جَاءَ سَلْمَانُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ بِمَائِدَةٍ عَلَيْهَا رُطَبٌ فَوَضَعَهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”مَا هَذَا يَا سَلْمَانُ“ قَالَ صَدَقَةٌ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أَصْحَابِكَ قَالَ ”ارْفَعْهَا فَإِنَّا لَا نَأْكُلُ الصَّدَقَةَ“ فَرَفَعَهَا فَجَاءَ مِنَ الْغَدِ بِمِثْلِهِ فَوَضَعَهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ يَحْمِلُهُ فَقَالَ ”مَا هَذَا يَا سَلْمَانُ“ فَقَالَ هَدِيَّةٌ لَكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَصْحَابِهِ ”ابْسُطُوا“ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى الْخَاتَمِ الَّذِي عَلَى ظَهْرِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَآمَنَ بِهِ وَكَانَ لِلْيَهُودِ فَاشْتَرَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِكَذَا وَكَذَا دِرْهَمًا وَعَلَى أَنْ يَغْرِسَ نَخْلًا فَيَعْمَلَ سَلْمَانُ فِيهَا حَتَّى يَطْعَمَ قَالَ فَغَرَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّخْلَ إِلَّا نَخْلَةً وَاحِدَةً غَرَسَهَا عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَحَمَلَتِ النَّخْلُ مِنْ عَامِهَا وَلَمْ تَحْمِلِ النَّخْلَةُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”مَا شَأْنُ هَذِهِ“ قَالَ عُمَرُ أَنَا غَرَسْتُهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَنَزَعَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ غَرَسَهَا فَحَمَلَتْ مِنْ عَامِهَا
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraidah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) came with a tray on which there were dates, and presented himself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He placed the tray in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Salman! What is this?" He replied: "This is charity for you and your companions." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take it away, we do not eat from charity." So he took it away. The next day, he came again as before and brought food and placed it before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Salman! What is this?" He replied: "O Messenger of Allah! This is a gift for you." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions: "Extend your hands." Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) also observed the seal on the back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and after seeing all this, he accepted faith. At that time, Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) was a slave of the Jews. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bought him in exchange for some dirhams and planting date palms. The condition was that Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) would work in the garden until those trees bore fruit. All the date palms were planted by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with his own hands, except for one tree which was planted by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). All the trees bore fruit that same year, except for the one date palm which did not bear fruit. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What happened to this one?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "O Messenger of Allah! I planted this tree." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) uprooted it and replanted it, and it too bore fruit that same year.
