Hadith 11724

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qais bin Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “As-Salamu ‘Alaikum wa Rahmatullah.” Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) replied to the greeting in a low voice. (The Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] said this greeting three times, and Sayyiduna Sa’d [may Allah be pleased with him] replied in such a low voice three times that the Prophet [peace and blessings be upon him] did not hear it.) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) followed him and said: “O Messenger of Allah! I was hearing your greeting and was replying in a low voice so that you would greet us as much as possible.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned with him. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) arranged water for your (peace and blessings be upon him) bath; you (peace and blessings be upon him) took a bath. After that, he presented a fragrant garment dyed with saffron or wars to you (peace and blessings be upon him); you (peace and blessings be upon him) put that garment on yourself. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands and prayed: “O Allah! Fill the family of Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah with Your mercies and blessings.” After that, you (peace and blessings be upon him) ate food. When you (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to return, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) presented a donkey for your (peace and blessings be upon him) ride, on which a thick sheet was placed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted the donkey. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) told Sayyiduna Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) to go with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so Sayyiduna Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) went along. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “You also mount (the donkey).” He refused to mount out of respect, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Either you mount or go back.” So I returned.
