It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Four verses were revealed about my father (Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him). My father said: (During the Battle of Badr! This shows that Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas was among the very first to embrace Islam. According to a narration in Bukhari: 3727, he also considered himself to be a third of Islam.) During the battle, I found a sword. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please grant me this sword as an extra share. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Put it down. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Please grant me this sword as an extra share, just consider that I cannot do without it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Put it back where you picked it up from. At that moment, the verse was revealed: {یَسْأَلُونَکَ الْأَنْفَالَ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ} This is the recitation of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), (whereas in the Mutawatir recitation of the Noble Qur'an it is: "Yas'aloonaka 'anil-anfal"). Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: My mother said: Does Allah not command you to maintain ties of kinship and to be good to your parents? By Allah! I will neither eat nor drink until you disbelieve in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So she would not eat anything, until the family would open her mouth with a stick and put something to drink in it. Shu'bah says: I think my teacher, Simak bin Harb, also mentioned food. At that moment, this verse was revealed: {وَوَصَّیْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَیْہِ حَمَلَتْہُ اُمُّہ وَہْنًا عَلٰی وَہْنٍ وَّفِصٰلُہ فِیْ عَامَیْنِ اَنِ اشْکُرْ لِیْ وَلِوَالِدَیْکَ اِلَیَّ الْمَصِیْرُ۔ وَاِنْ جَاہَدٰکَ عَلٰٓی اَنْ تُشْرِکَ بِیْ مَا لَیْسَ لَکَ بِہٖعِلْمٌفَلَاتُطِعْہُمَاوَصَاحِبْہُمَافِی الدُّنْیَا مَعْرُوْفًا ْ وَّاتَّبِعْ سَبِیْلَ مَنْ اَنَابَ اِلَیَّ ثُمَّ اِلَیَّ مَرْجِعُکُمْ فَاُنَبِّئُکُمْ بِمَا کُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ۔} … And indeed, We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. (That is why We have advised him:) Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination. But if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. But accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]. Then to Me will be your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do. (Surah Luqman: 14, 15) Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was ill, and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! May I bequeath all my wealth (in charity for the sake of Allah)? He said: No. I said: Half of my wealth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No. I asked: One third? Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and people started acting upon this. An Ansari invited people to a meal, people ate there and drank wine and became intoxicated. This was before the prohibition of wine. We gathered at his place, people began to boast to one another, the Ansar said: We are superior, and the Muhajirun said: We are superior. A man picked up a camel's jawbone and struck Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), splitting his nose. Sayyiduna Sa'd's nose was split. At that moment, these verses were revealed: {یَا أَیُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوْا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَیْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّیْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوْہُ لَعَلَّکُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ۔ اِنَّمَا یُرِیْدُ الشَّیْطَانُ اَنْ یُّوْقِعَ بَیْنَکُمُ الْعَدَاوَۃَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِیْ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَیْسِرِ وَیَصُدَّکُمْ عَنْ ذِکْرِ اللّٰہِ وَعَنِ الصَّلٰوۃِ فَھَلْ اَنْتُمْ مُّنْتَھُوْنَ} … O you who have believed! Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Hafiz Ibn Kathir, citing (Kitab al-‘Asharah by al-Tabarani), has mentioned this narration: Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Malik radi Allahu anhu said: This verse was revealed about me. I used to serve my mother greatly and was completely obedient to her. When Allah guided me towards Islam, my mother became very upset with me and said: “Child, where have you brought this new religion from? Listen, I command you to abandon this religion, otherwise I will neither eat nor drink and will die of hunger like this.” I did not abandon Islam, but my mother truly stopped eating and drinking, and people from all sides began taunting me, saying that I was the killer of my mother. I became very distressed in my heart and repeatedly pleaded with my mother, flattered her, and explained to her: “For Allah’s sake, give up your stubbornness; it is impossible for me to leave this true religion.” In this stubbornness, my mother went three days without food, and her condition became very bad. I went to her again and said: “My dear mother! Listen, you are dearer to me than my own life, but you are not dearer to me than my religion. By Allah! Not just one, even if you had a hundred lives, and one by one they all left you in this hunger and thirst, even then I would not abandon my true religion of Islam until the last moment.” Now my mother had become hopeless and started eating and drinking again.
