Naeem bin Mujmir narrates that it is reported from Sayyiduna Rabee’ah bin Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I used to serve the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and would fulfill all your needs throughout the day, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform the ‘Isha prayer. After the ‘Isha prayer, when you would go to your house, I would sit at your door. I would think that perhaps the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) might need something. I would keep listening to your voice for quite a long time as you would keep uttering the words: “Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah, Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,” until I would get tired and return, or sleep would overcome me and I would fall asleep. Since I was always ready to serve you and would serve you well, one day you (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “O Rabee’ah! Ask me for something, I will give it to you.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! I will think and then present my request.” I pondered a lot in my heart, and it occurred to me that the world is a thing that will come to an end, and I have enough worldly sustenance, and more will keep coming. I thought that I should ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for something regarding the Hereafter, because your status with Allah Almighty is very high. So I presented myself in your service, and you (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Rabee’ah! Tell me, what have you thought?” I said: “O Messenger of Allah! I have thought about it. I request you to intercede for me with my Lord, the Exalted, that He frees me from Hell.” You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Rabee’ah! Who told you to make this supplication?” I said: “By Allah, no one told me this, but when you said to me, ‘Ask me, I will give you,’ and your status with Allah is as it is, so I considered all my matters and remembered that the world is a thing that will come to an end, and I have a lot of worldly sustenance, and more will keep coming. So I thought that I should ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for something regarding the Hereafter.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for quite a while, then said to me: “Alright, I will do this, but help me by making many prostrations.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Reflect on how Sayyiduna Rabi‘ah acted with such foresight and prudence that he preferred to make do with what sufficed him in this world, and made salvation from Hell in the Hereafter his true objective. Furthermore, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not leave him relying solely upon his intercession, but rather instructed him to perform abundant prostrations (sujood).
