It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him) was a cheerful person. He would go to women and, while passing by them, would say something humorous. Because of this temperament of his, I told my wife that Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him) should not come to you; if he comes, it will not be good for you. It was the custom of the Ansar that if there was a woman without a husband among them, they would not marry her off until they knew whether the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) needed her or not. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to an Ansari: Give me your daughter in marriage. He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! And this would be a source of pride and honor for me, and I would be extremely happy. At the same time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that I am not asking for her for myself. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Then for whom? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: For Julaibib. Upon hearing this, he said: O Messenger of Allah! Let me consult the girl's mother, that is, my wife. He went to the girl's mother and informed her that the Messenger of Allah is asking for your daughter's hand. She said: Absolutely, and we would be extremely happy. The husband explained that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is not asking for himself, but for Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him). She said: For Julaibib? No, we cannot give our daughter to Julaibib, not Julaibib. By Allah! We will not marry her to Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him). When the man was about to go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to inform him of his wife's response, the girl spoke up: Who has brought the proposal for my marriage to you? Her mother told her. The girl said: Will you reject the word of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Hand me over to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he will not let me go to waste. So the girl's father went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), related the whole matter, and said: Now you have authority over her. Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married her to Julaibib (may Allah be pleased with him).
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went on an expedition. When Allah granted him victory, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you find anyone missing? The Companions replied that such and such people are not to be seen. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then see who else is missing. The Companions said: No one else seems to be missing. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: But I do not see Julaibib. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that he be searched for among the slain, that is, the martyrs. The Companions went and found him in such a state that seven disbelievers lay dead near him. It appeared that he had killed those seven and then was martyred himself. The Companions came and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! He killed seven disbelievers and then was martyred himself. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his body, stood near him, and said: He killed seven men, then the disbelievers martyred him. He is mine and I am his, he is mine and I am his. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this two or three times. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lifted his body with his arms. His grave was prepared, and the arms of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) served as his bier. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him in the grave. There is no mention of him being given a ritual bath. Thabit says that among the Ansar, she was the only widow for whom many people expressed a desire to marry. Ishaq bin Abdullah bin Abi Talha said to Thabit: Do you know what supplication the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made for her? He prayed: O Allah! Shower blessings and goodness upon her, and do not make her livelihood difficult. Because of this supplication, she was the only widow among the Ansar for whom many people desired to marry. Abu Abdur Rahman Abdullah bin Imam Ahmad says that in this world, only Hammad bin Salamah has narrated this hadith, and what an excellent hadith it is.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Some people have a cheerful temperament and a sense of humor, and such was the temperament of Sayyiduna Julaibib radi Allahu anhu.
From this blessed hadith, not only is the virtue of Sayyiduna Julaibib radi Allahu anhu established, but also the spirit of obedience to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in the Ansari woman is extremely commendable. The reason for this woman's initial refusal was that Sayyiduna Julaibib radi Allahu anhu was not handsome.
