Hadith 11644

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not tell you about the people of Hell and the people of Paradise? The people of Paradise are: every weak person, who is considered weak, disheveled-haired, and one who wears two worn-out old garments, (but in the sight of Allah Almighty, he is so esteemed that) if he swears an oath by Allah Almighty, He fulfills his oath. And the people of Hell are: every ill-tempered (and bad-natured) person, one who walks arrogantly, one who amasses a great deal of wealth and is extremely miserly, and one whom others follow.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The virtue of poor and obscure people who live in seclusion has been mentioned, those who do not have any distinguished status in society, who are subdued and helpless, and whom no one gives any importance to, yet they are honored and esteemed in the sight of Allah, the Exalted. Also, in this hadith, bad character and ill-temper, arrogance and pride, haughtiness and conceit, fame and notoriety, amassing wealth and property, and miserliness and stinginess have been condemned, and those possessing these traits have been described as inhabitants of Hell.

Since Sayyiduna Bara’ bin Malik radi Allahu anhu was also a poor man, he too becomes included in the purview of this hadith, as Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “How many are there with disheveled hair, covered in dust, and wearing two worn-out old garments, to whom no attention is paid, (but in the sight of Allah, the Exalted, he is so esteemed that) if he were to swear by Allah, Allah would fulfill his oath. Among them is Bara’ bin Malik.” (Tirmidhi: 3854)
