عَنْ حَفْصَةَ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ”إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ لَا يَدْخُلَ النَّارَ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ شَهِدَ بَدْرًا وَالْحُدَيْبِيَةَ“ قَالَتْ فَقُلْتُ أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَقُولُ {وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا} [مريم: 71] قَالَتْ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ ”ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا“ [مريم: 72]
It is narrated from Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: I hope that none of those who participated in Badr and Hudaybiyyah will, insha’Allah, enter Hell. Sayyida Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I said: Is it not that Allah Almighty has said: {وَاِنْ مِنْکُمْ اِلَّا وَارِدُھَا} … And there is none of you except he will come to it (Hell)? She says: Then I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) recite further: {ثُمَّ نُنْجِی الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِیْنَ فِیْہَا جِثِیَّا} … Then We will save those who feared Allah, and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Mubashshir radi Allahu anha that she heard the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saying this while he was with Sayyidah Hafsah radi Allahu anha. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “None of those who pledged allegiance under the tree, from among the Companions of the Tree, will enter the Fire, if Allah wills.” She said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah!” Then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam rebuked her, so Hafsah said: {وَإِنْ مِنْکُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُہَا} The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: {ثُمَّ نُنَجِّی الَّذِینَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِینَ فِیہَا جِثِیًّا} [مریم: ۷۲].” (Sahih Muslim: 2496, and the wording is from Ahmad)
Those who pledged allegiance to me under the tree at Hudaybiyyah, insha’Allah, none of them will enter Hellfire. Sayyidah Hafsah radi Allahu anha said: “Why not, O Messenger of Allah!” Then when he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam rebuked her, she said that Allah the Exalted has said: {وَإِنْ مِنْکُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُہَا} … And indeed, every one of you will come to it (Hell). The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: Allah the Exalted has also said: {ثُمَّ نُنَجِّی الَّذِینَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِینَ فِیہَا جِثِیًّا} … Then We will save those who were God-fearing, and We will leave the wrongdoers therein, fallen on their knees.
It is narrated from Isra’il that Suddi says: I asked Hamdani about the statement of Allah the Exalted, { وَإِنْ مِنْکُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُہَا}, and he said: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “People will come to the Fire, then they will depart from it according to their deeds. The first of them will pass like the flash of lightning, then like the wind, then like the running of a horse, then like a rider on his mount, then like a man running, then like a man walking.” … People will come upon Hell, and then, according to their deeds, they will cross it: the first group will pass like the flash of lightning, the next like the wind, then like the speed of a horse, then like a rider on a camel, then like a man running, and then like a man walking, they will pass over Hell. (Tirmidhi)
The command of Allah the Exalted is:
{وَاِنْ مِّنْکُمْ اِلَّا وَارِدُہَا کَانَ عَلٰی رَبِّکَ حَتْمًا مَّقْضِیًّا۔ ثُمَّ نُـنَجِّی الَّذِیْنَ اتَّقَوْا وَّنَذَرُ الظّٰلِمِیْنَ فِیْہَا جِثِیًّا} … There is none among you but will come to it (Hell); this is a decree which your Lord will accomplish. Then We will save those who were God-fearing, and We will leave the wrongdoers therein, fallen on their knees. (Surah Maryam: 71, 72)
Those for whom entry into Hell is decreed will not be able to cross the Bridge (Sirat) and will fall from it into Hell, but those for whom entry into Paradise is decreed will cross over this Bridge and enter Paradise. These verses refer to this crossing. Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: There is no contradiction between the two narrations; the one that mentions entering Hell means passing over its bridge, because whoever passes over the Bridge of Sirat above Hell, it is as if he has entered Hell in meaning.
