It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated on the pulpit. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the Ansar: The example of the general people's relationship with me is like an outer garment, and the relationship of the Ansar with me is like a garment that is attached to the body (i.e., the Ansar are my special people). If the general people walk in one valley and the Ansar in another mountain pass, then I would prefer to walk in the pass of the Ansar, and if there were no virtue in migration, I would have been one of the Ansar myself. Whoever attains authority and rule over the Ansar should treat their righteous ones with kindness, and if any of them makes a mistake, he should overlook it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards himself and said: Whoever frightened them, it is as if he frightened me.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is a perfect expression of the love of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam for the Ansar, that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would prefer to walk in their valley! This hadith is mawquf, meaning it is the statement of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu, therefore no legal ruling can be derived from it. (Abdullah Rafiq)
The Ansar were those people who resided in Madinah; they first gave refuge to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in their city, then at every opportunity aided and protected him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and warmly welcomed and humbly received the emigrants (Muhajirun) who came to Madinah, offering everything they had in their service.
When the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam began preaching the religion of Allah in the land of Makkah, he continued to call to tawhid (monotheism) and the Sunnah, but not only did the people persist in shirk (polytheism) and bid‘ah (innovation), they left no stone unturned in trying to eradicate him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. An Ansari companion, Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdullah radi Allahu anhu, says (in summary): The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam resided in Makkah for about ten years, going after people to their homes, tents, and the markets of ‘Ukaz and Majannah, raising the call of truth. During Hajj, at Mina, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would say to the people: ((Man yu’weeni? Man yansuruni? Hatta ubaligha risalati rabbi wa lahu al-jannah.)) … Is there anyone who will give me refuge? Is there anyone who will help me? So that I may convey the messages of my Lord, (and whoever does so) for him is Paradise.
This continued until we, the Ansar, rose up from Yathrib (i.e., Madinah), provided shelter for him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and proclaimed his truthfulness. We would come to him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam one by one, listen to the Qur’an, and then return home to convey this message to our families. Eventually, we consulted among ourselves: how long will this continue, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam wanders the mountains of Makkah, suffering blows, and remains fearful of the idolaters? So, according to a well-thought-out plan, during the Hajj season, seventy of us Ansar reached the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam at ‘Aqabah (the mountain pass) and pledged allegiance to him, inviting him to come to Madinah Munawwarah. (Musnad Ahmad)
It was these very Ansar who became the support of Islam, its founder, and the people of Islam, and declared war against all of Arabia. When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, along with his devoted companions, traversed the valleys of migration and arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, the Ansar companions set such an example of support and help, love and affection, brotherhood and fraternity, and unity and camaraderie, the like of which was never seen in the past nor is hoped for in the future. Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu narrates that Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman ibn Awf al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu said to his Muhajir brother Sayyiduna Sa‘d ibn Rabi‘ radi Allahu anhu: Take half of my wealth, and I have two wives; look at them, and whichever you like, I will divorce her, and after her waiting period (‘iddah) you may marry her. (Bukhari) Then, for a long period of ten years, these Ansar remained the hands and arms of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. These are the reasons why the love of these people was in the heart of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
The Ansar watered the tree of Islam with their blood, made their city the center of Islam. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to announce in Makkah that the Quraysh had prevented him from preaching Islam; who will give me refuge so that I may convey the message of my Lord to the people? The Ansar, risking their wealth and lives and taking on the enmity of friends, responded to his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam call. The Muhajirun, who were the capital of Islam, were made partners in their homes and properties. The love for these sacred souls was made a sign of faith, and hatred for them a sign of hypocrisy. How can the wretched one who does not honor these sons and pillars of Islam ever attain the blessing of faith and certainty?
