It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Maghrib prayer is the witr of the day’s prayers, so make the night prayer also witr, and the night prayer is in sets of two rak‘ahs, and in the last part of the night, witr is one rak‘ah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In any case, it is established that the night prayer (Salat al-Layl) is performed in sets of two rak‘ahs, and at the end of it, one rak‘ah of witr may be offered. Although it is preferable to perform witr in the last part of the night, it can be performed at any time after the ‘Isha prayer until before the break of dawn (Fajr). (Bukhari: 996) (Abdullah Rafiq)
