Hadith 11508

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the time of the Messenger of Allah’s (peace and blessings be upon him) passing drew near, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Come, let me write something for you, after which you will never go astray.” At that time, Sayyiduna Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and other people were present in the house. Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is overcome by pain. You have the Qur’an with you; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us.” The people present in the house then differed over this and began to argue. Some said, “Let the Messenger of Allah write for you what he wishes to write,” while others supported the statement of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When their disagreement and noise increased greatly and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became saddened, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “All of you leave from here.” Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that the greatest calamity was that disagreement and noise which came between the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his writing.
