Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hudhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) with his letter to Kisra. He handed over that letter to the ruler of Bahrain so that he could deliver it to Kisra. Thus, the ruler of Bahrain delivered that letter to Kisra. When he read the letter, he tore it up. Sa'id bin Musayyib (peace and blessings be upon him) also narrated that because of this action, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked a curse upon them that (they be destroyed in such a way that) they be torn to pieces.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the following narration, there is a detailed mention of this hadith:
Muhammad bin Umar Aslami, with his chains of narration from several Companions—some of whose narrations’ wordings have become mixed with others—reports that they said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Abdullah bin Hudhafah al-Sahmi, who was one of the six, to Kisra (the Persian emperor), inviting him to Islam, and wrote a letter with him. Abdullah said: I delivered the letter of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to him, it was read to him, then he took it and tore it up. When this reached the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he said: “O Allah, tear apart his kingdom.” Kisra then wrote to Bazan, his governor over Yemen, instructing him to send two strong men from his side to this man in the Hijaz (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), so that they may bring him information about him. Bazan sent his chief scribe and another man, and wrote a letter with them. They arrived in Madinah and delivered Bazan’s letter to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) smiled and invited them to Islam, while the flesh on their shoulders was trembling. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to them: “Go away from me today, and come to me tomorrow so that I may inform you of what I intend.” When they came to him the next day, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to them: “Convey to your master that my Lord has killed his lord, Kisra, this very night.” …
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent our master Abdullah bin Hudhafah al-Sahmi (radi Allahu anhu), who was one of the six, to Kisra to invite him to Islam and wrote a letter as well. Abdullah bin Hudhafah (radi Allahu anhu) says: I delivered the letter of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to Kisra, it was read to him, he took the letter and tore it into pieces. When the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) learned of this situation, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: O Allah! Shatter his kingdom to pieces. Then Kisra wrote to Bazan, the governor of Yemen, instructing him to send two courageous men to this man in the Hijaz (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) so that they may inform him of the reality. Bazan sent his chief scribe and another man with his letter. These two reached Madinah and gave Bazan’s letter to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) smiled and invited them to Islam; at that time, the flesh of their shoulders was trembling. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered them: Both of you go away today, meet me tomorrow, and I will inform you of my intention. When they came the next day, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to them: Convey my message to your leader (Bazan) that this night my Lord has killed his lord, Kisra.
(Ibn Sa’d: 1/258, 260; Sahihah: 1429)
The kingdom of Khosrow Parviz became the subject of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplication against him. The Romans inflicted a terrible defeat on Kisra’s army, then Khosrow’s son, Shiruya, rebelled against him, killed him, and seized the throne. After that, a series of division and chaos ensued, until during the era of the second Caliph, Umar bin Khattab (radi Allahu anhu), the Islamic army conquered that land and this kingdom was ended forever.
