Narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the captives of Banu Mustaliq among the Companions, Juwayriya bint al-Harith came into the share of Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) or his cousin. Sayyida Juwayriya (may Allah be pleased with her) immediately entered into a contract of manumission with them (that she would be freed after paying a certain amount within a certain period). She was a very attractive woman; whoever saw her would keep looking at her. She came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek his help regarding her contract of manumission. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When I saw her at the door of my room, out of jealousy, I did not like her. I knew that whatever I was feeling about her, you (the Prophet) would surely feel the same (that she is very beautiful and should be married). So she went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am the daughter of the chief of my people, Harith bin Abi Dhirar. The trial that has befallen me is not hidden from you. Now I have come into the share of Thabit bin Qais bin Shamas (may Allah be pleased with him) or his cousin. I have made a contract of manumission with him for my freedom, and I have come to you to seek your help in this matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Would you like something better than that? She asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is that? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That I pay the entire amount of your contract and marry you. She said: O Messenger of Allah! That is fine, I am pleased. Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the news spread among the people that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had married Juwayriya bint al-Harith, the people said: These captives have now become the in-laws of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So they freed the captives who were in their shares. She narrates that as a result of the Prophet’s marriage to Juwayriya (may Allah be pleased with her), a hundred households of Banu Mustaliq were set free. I do not know of any woman who proved to be a greater blessing for her people than her.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the expedition against Banu al-Mustaliq, many people from this tribe were taken captive. Among them was Juwayriyyah, the daughter of the chief of the tribe, Harith ibn Abi Dhirar. This captivity became a means of good fortune for her. When the captives were distributed, she came into the share of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shamas or his cousin. She entered into a contract of manumission (mukatabah) with him, meaning she agreed to pay a certain amount in exchange for her freedom. In pursuit of assistance, she came to the service of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), so he paid her entire amount and expressed his intention to marry her. She agreed to this. In this way, she attained the honor of becoming Umm al-Mu’minin (Mother of the Believers) and the wife of the Prophet.
Due to this marriage, the Banu al-Mustaliq became the in-laws of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Therefore, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) did not find it appropriate to keep the members of the Prophet’s in-law tribe as captives and set them free. In Sharh Musnad, it is mentioned that their number was seven hundred. Thus, Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (radi Allahu anha) proved to be extremely blessed for her people. In al-Isabah, it is stated that the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq is also called the Expedition of al-Muraysi’. This occurred in the fifth or sixth year of Hijrah. Ibn Sa’d, Ibn Abi Khaythamah, and Abu ‘Umar have narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (radi Allahu anhu) that before this, her name was Barrah. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) changed it to Juwayriyyah.
