عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَحْتَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَحْشٍ وَكَانَ أَتَى النَّجَاشِيَّ وَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ وَكَانَ رَحَلَ إِلَى النَّجَاشِيِّ فَمَاتَ وَأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ وَإِنَّهَا بِأَرْضِ الْحَبَشَةِ زَوَّجَهَا إِيَّاهُ النَّجَاشِيُّ وَمَهَرَهَا أَرْبَعَةَ آلَافٍ ثُمَّ جَهَّزَهَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ وَبَعَثَ بِهَا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَعَ شَرَحْبِيلَ بْنِ حَسَنَةَ وَجِهَازُهَا كُلُّهُ مِنْ عِنْدِ النَّجَاشِيِّ وَلَمْ يُرْسِلْ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِشَيْءٍ وَكَانَ مُهُورُ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْبَعَ مِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ
It is narrated from Urwah, who reports from Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she was married to Ubaydullah bin Jahsh. He had gone to the court of Najashi and died there (after becoming an apostate). Sayyida Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) was still in Abyssinia when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her. Her marriage to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performed by Najashi, and he paid four thousand dinars as her dowry on behalf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he prepared her for the journey and sent her to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with Sharjeel bin Hasnah (may Allah be pleased with him). All her preparations and provisions were from Najashi; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had not sent anything. The dowry of the rest of the wives was four hundred dirhams.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The name of Sayyidah Umm Habibah radi Allahu anha was Ramla. She was the daughter of Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan radi Allahu anhu. She was born seventeen months before the Prophethood. She was married to Ubaydullah bin Jahsh, then both husband and wife became Muslim and migrated to Abyssinia. There, Ubaydullah became a Christian and died, but the Lady remained steadfast upon Islam. Then the Negus (Najashi) married her to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
