Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her after the death of Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), two or three years before the migration to Madinah, while her age was seven years. When we came to Madinah, some women came to me while I was swinging on a swing and my hair was down to my shoulders. Those women took me, prepared and adorned me, and then brought me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and my marriage was consummated. At that time, my age was nine years.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Islamic Shariah, reason is subordinate to the transmitted sciences; by transmitted sciences is meant the Qur’an and Hadith. One of the laws regarding marriage and nikah is that when the time of consummation arrives, both the man and the woman should be of age (baligh) and willing to marry each other. Consider the first marriage of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: he was a young man of twenty-five years, and Sayyidah Khadijah radi Allahu anha was a forty-year-old widow. Since both were agreeable, each accepted the other. The same applies to these ahadith: Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha attained maturity (bulugh) at the age of nine, and there are other examples of women reaching maturity at this age as well. At that time, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was fifty-three years old. Since there was mutual consent from both sides—and in fact, Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha was attaining great felicity—therefore, we do not have the right to let our intellect interfere by questioning how it could be that Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha was nine years old and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was fifty-three years old and they were married.
