It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyida Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with her), passed away, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has had intercourse with his wife last night should not enter the grave." Thus, Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) did not enter the grave.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The first marriage of Sayyida Ruqayyah radi Allahu anha and Sayyida Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha, respectively, was to their paternal cousins Utbah bin Abi Lahab and Utaibah bin Abi Lahab. However, when Surah Lahab was revealed and they heard the condemnation of Abu Lahab, they, in demonstration of their enmity towards the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, divorced both daughters even before consummation. Afterwards, Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu married Sayyida Ruqayyah radi Allahu anha, and he migrated with her to Abyssinia. Then they returned to Makkah, and later migrated to Madinah Munawwarah. When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was engaged in the Battle of Badr, Sayyida Ruqayyah radi Allahu anha passed away. Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu was unable to participate in the Battle of Badr due to his service to her. When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned from Badr, he again made Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu his son-in-law through Sayyida Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha. For this reason, Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu is called Dhu al-Nurayn (the Possessor of Two Lights). However, life did not permit further companionship, and in Sha'ban (9 AH), Sayyida Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha passed away.
From this hadith, it is understood that a non-mahram and stranger may also bury a woman, because Sayyiduna Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu was a stranger to the daughters of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Nevertheless, the relatives of the deceased are most deserving of burying the deceased, as is stated in the noble verse of Allah: {وَاُلُوْا الْاَرْحَامِ بَعْضُھُمْ اَوْلٰی بِبَعْضٍ فِیْ کِتَابِ اللّٰہِ} (Surah al-Anfal: 75), meaning: And in the Book of Allah, relatives are more entitled to one another. Also, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was buried by Sayyiduna Ali, Sayyiduna Abbas, Sayyiduna Fadl, and the freed slave of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Salih. If there are no relatives or they are unable, then others should assist. It is also understood that the condition for one who descends into the grave is that he should not have fulfilled the rights of marriage (i.e., marital relations) the previous night.
