It is narrated from Ali bin Hussain bin Ali bin Abi Talib that Sayyiduna Miswar bin Makhrama (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a marriage proposal to the daughter of Abu Jahl, while the daughter of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her), was already in his wedlock. When Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) heard about this, she came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "Your people will talk that you do not get angry with anyone regarding your daughters. Now see, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is making preparations to marry the daughter of Abu Jahl." Upon hearing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, recited the sermon of testimony, and then said: "I married one of my daughters to Abu Al-As bin Rabi' (may Allah be pleased with him), and he fulfilled the promise he made to me. Indeed, Fatima bint Muhammad is a part of me; I do not like that people should distress and grieve her. By Allah! The daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the daughter of the enemy of Allah can never be united in the wedlock of one man." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) abandoned his plan.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was forbearing; he would not become angry over personal matters. In this instance, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam expressed anger for the sake of Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha. This incident also occurred after the conquest of Makkah, at which time only Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha remained among his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s children. Prior to this, Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha had already suffered the grief of her mother’s and sisters’ deaths, and for this reason, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was especially considerate of her happiness. Sayyiduna Abu al-As radi Allahu anhu was the husband of the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam eldest daughter, Sayyidah Zaynab radi Allahu anha. Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: It is possible that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam placed this restriction upon him, that he should not marry a second wife during the lifetime of Sayyidah Zaynab radi Allahu anha.
After the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prophethood, the Quraysh demanded of Sayyiduna Abu al-As radi Allahu anhu that he divorce Sayyidah Zaynab radi Allahu anha, but he refused and continued to treat his wife with kindness.
