Hadith 11265

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of Makkah asked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for a miracle, so in Makkah the moon was split into two twice. Then Allah Almighty said: {اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَۃُ وَانْشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ وَإِنْ یَرَوْْا آیَۃًیُعْرِضُوْا وَیَقُولُوْا سِحْرٌ مُسْتَمِرٌّ} … The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split. Yet whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, “This is passing magic.” Allama Abdur Rahman Mubarakpuri, in the commentary of Tirmidhi, Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi (vol. 4, p. 191), and Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in the commentary of Sahih Bukhari, Fath al-Bari (vol. 7, p. 183), after considering other narrations, have given preference to the view that the meaning of “martain” is “fiqatayn,” i.e., the moon was split into two pieces, not that it was split twice. Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This miracle was shown at the request of the people of Makkah. Among the scholars, it is agreed upon that the splitting of the moon occurred during the time of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and it is among his clear miracles. Authentic, rigorously transmitted (sahih sanad) hadiths indicate this. However, instead of believing, the Quraysh declared it to be magic and persisted in their attitude of turning away.
