Hadith 11196

It is narrated from Qasim that Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked: What was the occupation of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) at home? She replied: He was also a human being, so (like other people) he would inspect his clothes for lice, milk the goat, and do his own work.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This demonstrates the simplicity and humility of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, which he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also established as a way of life for his Ummah. If a person begins to observe these Sunnahs of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, his life can become free from many difficulties and affectations. A person who performs such acts will be cleansed of arrogance, and his humility and modesty will increase. As Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu narrates, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “He is not arrogant who eats with his servant, rides a donkey in the markets, and ties the legs of a goat and milks it.” (al-Sahihah: 2218) … That person is not arrogant whose servant eats with him, who rides a donkey in the markets, and who ties the legs of a goat and milks it.

If a person does not get the opportunity to perform these acts in the routine of life, then occasionally, considering them as the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he should perform them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, he says: “The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to sit on the ground, eat on the ground, tie the legs of a goat and milk it, and accept the invitation of a slave to eat barley bread.” … The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to sit on the ground, eat while sitting on the ground, tie the legs of a goat and milk it, and accept the invitation of a slave who invited him to eat barley bread. (Mu’jam Kabir al-Tabarani: 3/164/1, Sahihah: 2125)

The most important point in this hadith is accepting the invitation of the most lowly individual in society. Nowadays, this beautiful Sunnah is being completely neglected, and people gather in crowds at the mere signal of the elders and influential people. This is the result of a lack of love for the Prophetic Sunnahs, ostentation, flattery, and sycophancy. Another important lesson is that those who accept invitations should not find fault with the things presented at the invitation; rather, whatever is offered by the host should be consumed with enthusiasm and appreciation, because the exalted and highly esteemed Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, would respond to the invitation of a slave, even though the only thing presented at that invitation was barley bread.
