عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَا تُطْرُونِي كَمَا أَطْرَتِ النَّصَارَى عِيسَى بْنَ مَرْيَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians exaggerated regarding Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him). I am merely Allah's servant and His Messenger.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Christians declared ‘Isa (alayhis salam) to be the son of Allah, and then began to worship him as well. Upon seeing this practice of the People of the Book, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) wished to teach that the rank which Allah Ta’ala has granted him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) should not be exceeded.
