Hadith 11185

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man addressed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O our master! And O son of our master! O the one who is the best among us and the offspring of the most excellent among us. But when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this, he said: O people! Say what is known (i.e., appropriate), and never let Satan lead you into exaggeration. I am Muhammad, son of Abdullah, and the Messenger of Allah. By Allah! I do not like that you raise me above the rank which Allah, the Exalted, has given me.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The well-known fact regarding the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is that he is the servant and Messenger of Allah, as this is acknowledged in the sermons, the tashahhud, and the testimony of faith (shahadah).

Humility (tawadu‘) means to deal with one another with modesty and humbleness, gentleness and compassion, and love and affection; not to consider anyone inferior on the basis of lineage or wealth, nor to oppress or wrong anyone. The reason is that if Allah the Exalted has granted someone status and rank, wealth and property, or abilities such as noble lineage, then he should thank Allah the Exalted for this, because his own abilities have not played a role in attaining these blessings; rather, it is solely the result of Allah the Exalted’s favor. Otherwise, it may happen that this favor of Allah the Exalted becomes harmful for him in such a way that he begins to look down upon Allah’s creation or commits oppression and excess against them. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was elevated to the highest ranks of honor and status, and no member of the ummah can be compared to him; yet, despite this, Allah the Exalted commanded him: {وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَکَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَکَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ} (Surah al-Shu‘ara: 215) … (O Muhammad!) Be gentle with your believing followers.
