It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of Hajj, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to the people and said: Beware! Indeed, time has returned to its original state and form, the same state and form in which Allah created it on the day He created the heavens and the earth. The year consists of twelve months, of which four are sacred months. Among them, Dhu al-Qa'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah, and Muharram are consecutive, and the fourth month is Rajab, which is between Jumada al-Thani and Sha'ban, and the tribe of Mudar greatly honors it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What day is it today? We replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for so long that we thought perhaps he would give it a new name. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is it not the Day of Sacrifice (i.e., the day of sacrifice, the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah)? We replied: Yes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What month is this? We replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for so long that we thought perhaps he would give it a new name. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is it not the month of Dhu al-Hijjah? We replied: Yes. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What city is this? We replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for so long that we thought perhaps he would give it a new name. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is it not the sacred city (i.e., the pure city)? We replied: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, your blood, your wealth, and your honor are sacred to one another just as the sanctity of this day, in this month, and in this city. Soon you will meet your Lord, and He will call you to account for your deeds. Beware! Do not go astray after me, striking the necks of one another. Beware! Have I conveyed the religion of Allah to you (or not)? Beware! Those of you who are present here should convey these words to those who are not present. It is possible that those to whom these words are conveyed may understand and remember them better than some of those who have heard them directly. (The narrator of the hadith, Muhammad ibn Sirin, said:) Indeed, it happened so. Some of those to whom these words were conveyed remembered them better than some of those who heard them directly.
