It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave a great deal from the spoils of war to the Quraysh and other Arab tribes, and the Ansar did not receive anything from it, a group among the Ansar felt some unease in their hearts because of this, to the extent that much was said about it, and some even said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has been overtaken by love for his own people.
Sa'd bin 'Ubadah Khazraji Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the way you have distributed the spoils of war has caused doubts in people's hearts, as you (peace and blessings be upon him) have given great gifts to your people, the Quraysh, and other Arab tribes, but the tribe of the Ansar has not received anything." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), if such things are being said, then where are you?" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I am only a member of my own people, but there is nothing like that in my heart." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Gather your people (the Ansar) in this enclosure." Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) went and gathered all his people and brought them to the enclosure. Some Muhajirun came, and Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) allowed them to enter, so they came in. Some others also wanted to come, but Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) sent them back. When everyone had gathered, Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) came and informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that, according to his command, the Ansar had gathered. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to them. First, he praised Allah as is His due, then said, "O group of Ansar! What is this matter that has reached me from you? Have you felt some resentment in your hearts? Is it not true that when I came to you, you were astray, and Allah honored you with guidance? And you were poor, and Allah made you wealthy? You were enemies of one another, and Allah joined your hearts together?" All the Ansar said, "This is absolutely true; Allah and His Messenger have bestowed great favor and kindness upon us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "O Ansar! Will you not accept one thing from me?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah! What is that? Allah and His Messenger have indeed bestowed great favor and kindness upon us." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "By Allah! If you wish, you could say—and you would be truthful in your claim—that you (the Ansar) accepted me when people denied me, you confirmed me, you helped me when my people abandoned me, you gave me shelter when my people expelled me from my city and homeland, and you enriched me when I and the Muslims (the Muhajirun) were poor. So, O Ansar, have you developed resentment in your hearts over a small worldly possession? I have given these people this wealth so that they may become firm in Islam, and I have entrusted you to your Islam. O Ansar! Are you not pleased that people return to their homes with sheep and camels, while you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah? By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), if it were not for the honor of migration, I would have been one of the Ansar. If people walk in one valley and the Ansar walk in another, I will walk in the valley in which the Ansar walk. O Allah, have mercy on the Ansar, their children, and the children of their children."
Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that, upon hearing the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the people wept so much that their beards became wet with tears. And they said, "We are pleased with the division of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and with our share." After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, and we also departed.
