It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abd Rab Ka'bah, he says: I presented myself before Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), he was sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. I heard him say that once we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he stopped at a certain place. Some of us began to set up their tents, some untied their animals to graze, and some started practicing archery. Meanwhile, the caller of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) announced that the prayer was about to be established. We all gathered together. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and delivered a sermon and said: Every prophet before me taught his ummah everything he considered good for them, and warned them against everything he considered bad for them. For the earliest part of this ummah, only well-being has been kept. And the latter part of the ummah will face severe trials and hardships. Such tribulations and calamities will come that the severity of the later tribulation will make the previous one seem light. When a tribulation comes, the believer will say, "This tribulation will destroy me," then it will pass. Then another tribulation will come, and the believer will say the same thing again, then that too will pass. Whoever among you wishes to be saved from Hell and admitted to Paradise, he should die in a state of true faith in Allah and the Hereafter. And he should treat others as he likes to be treated by them. And whoever pledges allegiance to a ruler and makes a covenant of loyalty with him, he should obey him as much as he can. If another man comes and disputes with that ruler, then you should strike off the neck of the latter. Abdur Rahman bin Abd Rab al-Ka'bah says: After hearing these things, I put my head among the people and said, "I ask you by Allah, did you hear these things from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) yourself?" He pointed to his ears with his hands and said, "My ears have heard these things and my heart has retained them." So I said, "Your cousin Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) orders us to unjustly consume each other's wealth and to kill our Muslim brothers, while Allah Almighty says: {یَا أَیُّہَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لَا تَأْکُلُوا أَمْوَالَکُمْ بَیْنَکُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ} ... O you who believe! Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly. (Surah An-Nisa: 29)" So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) put both his hands together on his forehead and bowed his head for a while, then raised his head and said, "If he commands obedience to Allah, then obey him, and if he commands disobedience to Allah, then do not obey him."
