It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to a man about something and said: All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him and seek His help. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide him, and whomsoever He misguides, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger. Then he presented his matter.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In Sahih Muslim, this hadith is narrated in detail:
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma says: “Dimad came to Makkah. He was from the tribe of Azd Shanu’ah and used to perform ruqyah (incantations) for those afflicted by jinn. He heard some foolish people of Makkah saying, ‘Indeed, Muhammad is mad.’ So he said, ‘If I see this man, perhaps Allah will cure him through my hands.’ He met him and said, ‘O Muhammad! I perform ruqyah for this affliction, and Allah cures whom He wills through my hands. Do you wish for this?’ The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied by reciting the following sermon: ‘Indeed, all praise is due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He misguides, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. To proceed…’ He (Dimad) said, ‘Repeat these words of yours to me.’ So the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam repeated them to him three times. He (Dimad) then said, ‘I have heard the words of soothsayers, the words of magicians, and the poetry of poets, but I have never heard words like these. Indeed, these words have reached the depth of the sea.’ Then he said, ‘Give me your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you upon Islam.’ So he pledged allegiance to him. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then said, ‘And for your people as well?’ He said, ‘Yes, for my people as well.’ Later, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam dispatched a military expedition. When they passed by his people, the leader of the expedition said to the army, ‘Did you take anything from these people?’ A man from the group said, ‘I took a vessel for purification (ablution).’ He said, ‘Return it, for these are the people of Dimad.’ …
Dimad came to Makkah Mukarramah; he belonged to the tribe of Azd Shanu’ah. This man used to perform ruqyah (incantations) for those affected by jinn. When he heard the foolish people of Makkah saying that Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had become mad and insane, he said, ‘If I see this man, perhaps Allah the Exalted will grant him cure through my hands.’ Thus, he met the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said, ‘I perform ruqyah for those affected by jinn; Allah the Exalted grants cure through my hands to whom He wills. Do you desire this?’ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied by reciting this sermon: ‘Indeed, all praise is due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He misguides, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, alone, without partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. To proceed…’ He (Dimad) said, ‘Sir! Repeat these words again.’ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam repeated these words three times. Then he said, ‘I have heard the speech of soothsayers, the words of magicians, and the poetry of poets, but I have never heard such words. These words have reached the middle or the depth of the sea.’ Then he said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you upon Islam.’ Thus, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam took the pledge of allegiance from him. Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, ‘And your people?’ He said, ‘Yes, my people as well.’ Later, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam dispatched a military expedition. When they passed by his people, the commander of the expedition said to the fighters, ‘Did you take anything from these people?’ One man said, ‘Yes, I took a vessel used for purification (ablution).’ He said, ‘Return it, for these are the people of Sayyiduna Dimad radi Allahu anhu.’
We have written the meaning of qāmūs al-baḥr instead of nā‘ūs al-baḥr, because these are the well-known words in this narration. See Sharh Muslim by Nawawi.
