It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that it reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that some people had spoken indecently and inappropriately about his lineage. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit and said: O people, tell me! Who am I? The companions replied: You (peace and blessings be upon him) are the Messenger of Allah. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am Muhammad, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib. When Allah Almighty created the creation, He made me in the best group of mankind. He made tribes, so He placed me in the best tribe. He made their households, so He placed me in the best household. In terms of household and my own self (that is, in every respect), I am the best among you all.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The lineage of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is as follows: Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam son of Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib, son of Hashim, son of Abd Manaf, son of Qusayy, son of Kilab, son of Murrah, son of Ka‘b, son of Lu’ayy, son of Ghalib, son of Fihr, son of Malik, son of Nadr, son of Kinana, son of Khuzaymah, son of Mudrikah, son of Ilyas, son of Mudar, son of Nizar, son of Ma‘ad, son of Adnan. Adnan is, by consensus, from the progeny of Isma‘il alayhis salam, but there is great disagreement regarding how many generations are between them and what their names are.
You sallallahu alayhi wa sallam belonged to the tribe of Quraysh, which was the most honored tribe in all of Arabia. Quraysh was actually the title of either Fihr ibn Malik or Nadr ibn Kinana, and later his descendants became famous by this attribution.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said: From this hadith it is understood that the Arabs, as a race, are superior to the non-Arabs, then among the Arabs, the Quraysh are superior, among the Quraysh, Banu Hashim are superior, and among Banu Hashim, the most virtuous is Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In fact, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is the most virtuous among all of humanity.
Allah ta‘ala granted superiority and excellence to him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in every respect. In this hadith, the excellence of his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam lineage is mentioned.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdul Muttalib ibn Rabi‘ah radi Allahu anhu, he says: Some people from the Ansar came to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and said: “We hear things from your people, to the extent that someone among them says: ‘The example of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is like a date palm that has grown in a heap of refuse.’” Husayn, the narrator, said: “Kiba’ means refuse.” The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O people! Who am I?” They said: “You are the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.” He said: “I am Muhammad son of Abdullah son of Abdul Muttalib.” He said: “We had never heard him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mention his lineage before this.” Then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Behold! Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created His creation and made me from the best of His creation. Then He divided them into two groups and made me from the best of the two groups. Then He made them into tribes and made me from the best of their tribes. Then He made them into houses (families) and made me from the best of their houses. So I am the best of you in house and the best of you in self.” (Musnad Ahmad: 17517)
When people, criticizing the lineage of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, said that the example of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is like a date palm …, in response, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam proudly stated his lineage, that among the children of Adam, the most noble and honored lineage was destined for him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
In those ahadith in which he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade boasting due to one’s forefathers, what is meant is that manner which is without necessity and whose result is arrogance and the belittling of another Muslim.
