عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ قَالَ لَمَّا قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْسَلَتْ فَاطِمَةُ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ أَنْتَ وَرِثْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَمْ أَهْلُهُ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا بَلْ أَهْلُهُ قَالَتْ فَأَيْنَ سَهْمُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِذَا أَطْعَمَ نَبِيًّا طَعْمَةً ثُمَّ قَبَضَهُ جَعَلَهُ لِلَّذِي يَقُومُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ فَرَأَيْتُ أَنْ أَرُدَّهُ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَقَالَتْ فَأَنْتَ وَمَا سَمِعْتَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْلَمُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tufail (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent a message to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked: "Are you the heir of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), or are his family members his heirs?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "The heirs of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) are indeed his family members." Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: "Where is the share of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from the wealth of Fay'?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that when Allah Almighty grants something to any of His Prophets and then the Prophet passes away, after that, only his successor is entitled to that thing. I have thought to return this share to the Muslims." Upon hearing this, Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You know better whether you heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or not."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Tamim radi Allahu anhu, he says: It was said, “O Messenger of Allah! What right will the caliph have after you?” He said: “The same as I have, as long as he is just in judgment, equitable in justice, and shows mercy to relatives.” … Someone asked: O Messenger of Allah! What right will the caliph have after you? As long as he judges with justice and shows mercy to relatives, he will have the same right as I have. (Al-Tarikh al-Kabir by al-Bukhari: 4/46)
Hafiz Ibn Kathir, after quoting this hadith from Musnad Ahmad, said: There is strangeness (ghurabah) and objectionability (nakarah) in its text; it is possible that this narration is transmitted by meaning (bil-ma’na) and some narrators did not understand it, while in its chain of transmission there are also narrators in whom Shi’ism is found. This point should be known. In this matter, the best words are: “You and what you heard from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.” These words are more correct and more befitting to the status, leadership, knowledge, and religion of Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha. (Al-Bidayah: 5/289)
