عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ أُنْزِلَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ فَمَكَثَ بِمَكَّةَ عَشْرًا وَبِالْمَدِينَةِ عَشْرًا وَقُبِضَ وَهُوَ ابْنُ ثَلَاثٍ وَسِتِّينَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the revelation began to descend upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his blessed age was forty-three years. After that, he stayed in Makkah Mukarramah for ten years and in Madinah Munawwarah for ten years, and he passed away at the age of sixty-three years.

Benefits: … According to the second chain of narration, the wording of this narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu is as follows:
“Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was sent (as a Prophet) or the Qur’an was revealed to him when he was forty years old. He remained in Makkah for thirteen years and in Madinah for ten years.” He said: “Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam passed away at the age of sixty-three.”
When the Prophethood of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam began, or when the revelation of the Qur’an commenced upon him, his age was forty years. After that, he spent thirteen years in Makkah Mukarramah and ten years in Madinah Munawwarah, and he passed away at the age of sixty-three.
In one hadith, the revelation of wahy (divine revelation) is mentioned as beginning at the age of forty, and in another, at forty-three years. The reconciliation and harmonization between these is that in the second hadith, the period of the suspension of revelation (fatrah al-wahy) has not been counted; otherwise, the beginning of revelation to him sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was indeed at the age of forty years.
