It is narrated from Ibn Jurayj, who says: My father informed me that the companions of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not understand where they should bury the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), until Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that a prophet is buried at the place where he passes away. Thus, the bed of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was removed and the place beneath it was dug for the grave.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This was the reason that the grave of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was made within his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s own house, and seeing his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s grave, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu and Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu were also buried at his sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s side. Later, the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawi) was expanded.
