It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when people gathered to give Ghusl (ritual washing) to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), present in the house were his family, his uncle Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas, Sayyiduna Qutham bin Abbas, Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid bin Haritha, and their servant Sayyiduna Salih (may Allah be pleased with them all). When these people gathered to give Ghusl to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), from outside the door, a member of Banu Awf bin Khazraj, Sayyiduna Aws bin Khawli Ansari Badri (may Allah be pleased with him), called out to Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: “O Ali! I beseech you by Allah, we too have a right and share upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).” Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: “Come inside.” So he came in and was present at the time of the Ghusl of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he could not participate in giving the Ghusl. The shirt of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained as it was, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) held him to his chest. Sayyiduna Abbas, Sayyiduna Fadl, and Sayyiduna Qutham, together with Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, would turn the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid and their servant Sayyiduna Salih (may Allah be pleased with him) would pour water, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would give the Ghusl. Normally, in the bodies of the deceased, inappropriate things are seen, but nothing of the sort was seen in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would continue to give Ghusl and say: “May my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), how pure you are in your life and after your life.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was given Ghusl with water mixed with lotus leaves. When they finished giving Ghusl to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they dried his body, then all the actions were performed with him that are done with the deceased, then he was shrouded in three garments, two of which were white and one was a striped sheet. After this, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) called two men, sending one to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other to call Sayyiduna Abu Talhah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) Ansari. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dig graves for the people of Makkah, making box-type (shaqq) graves, and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to prepare side-type (lahd) graves for the people of Madinah. After sending both of them, Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “O Allah! Choose for Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) whichever of the two You wish.” Both of them went; the man who went to call Sayyiduna Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) could not find him, and the man who went to call Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) found him, so he brought him along, and he prepared a lahd (side-type) grave for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
