Hadith 11003

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not appoint anyone as a caliph. If he (peace and blessings be upon him) were to appoint anyone as a caliph, he would have appointed Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of this hadith is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not explicitly designate anyone in such a manner that, after him, so-and-so and so-and-so would be caliphs in a specific order. This does not contradict the action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, according to which he gave precedence to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu for leading the prayer (imamah), although there is certainly an indication in it.
