Hadith 10950

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that on the day Najashi passed away, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of his death on that very day. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded towards the place of funeral or the Eid ground, formed rows of his noble companions, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pronounced four takbirs.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The name of this Najashi was Ashamah.
This was a miracle of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he came to know of the death that occurred in Abyssinia on the very same day. The title of the king of Abyssinia was Najashi. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah said: The apparent matter is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went towards the funeral ground or the Eid ground to perform the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for Najashi so that a large number of Muslims would gather, and so that it would also become well-known that he had died upon Islam, because some people were not even aware of his being a Muslim. Ibn Abi Hatim has narrated in his Tafsir, and Dar Qutni in his Afrad, the narration that Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu said: When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam led the funeral prayer for Najashi, a certain companion said: “You sallallahu alayhi wa sallam have performed the funeral prayer for a man from Abyssinia.” At that moment, this verse was revealed: {وَاِنَّ مِنْ اَھْلِ الْکِتَابِ لَمَنْ یُّؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰہِ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ اِلَیْکُمْ وَمَا اُنْزِلَ اِلَیْھِمْ خٰشِعِیْنَ لِلّٰہِ لَایَشْتَرُوْنَ بِآیَاتِ اللّٰہِ ثَمَنًا قَلِیْلًا اُولٰـــٓئِکَ لَھُمْ اَجْرُھُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّھِمْ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ سَرِیْعُ الْحِسَابِ} (Surah Aal Imran: 199), meaning: “Indeed, among the People of the Book are those who believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down to them, being humble before Allah, and they do not sell the verses of Allah for a small price; for them is their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.” There are also supporting narrations for this in al-Mu’jam al-Kabir and al-Mu’jam al-Awsat, and in the narration of the latter there is the addition that the one who objected was a hypocrite.
