A man says: I said to Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), “A hadith has reached me about you, and I want to hear that hadith directly from you.” He said: “Alright. When the news reached me about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he had appeared, I felt intense aversion to it, so I left and went towards the lands of Rome. Yazid, the narrator, said that he went to Baghdad. I went to the Caesar. The aversion I felt upon the appearance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was less than the aversion I felt upon my arrival there. Then I thought, ‘By Allah! Why should I not go myself to this man? If he is a liar, he will not harm me, and if he is truthful, I will know his truth.’ So I came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When I arrived, people began to say: ‘Adi bin Hatim has come, Adi bin Hatim has come.’ I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said to me three times: ‘Adi bin Hatim! Accept Islam, you will find peace.’ I said: ‘I am already following a religion.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I know your religion better than you.’ I said: ‘Do you know my religion better than I do?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Yes. Are you not from the Rukusiyyah, and do you not take a quarter of the spoils from your people?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘According to your own religion, this is not lawful for you.’ As soon as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, I submitted to this statement. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I know what is preventing you from accepting Islam. You think that among the people, only the weak have followed me, those who have no worldly power, and the Arabs have rejected these people. Do you know Hira?’ I said: ‘Yes, I have not seen it, but I have certainly heard about it.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘By Him in Whose hand is my soul, Allah will surely make this religion prevail to such an extent that a woman riding a camel will travel from Hira and perform tawaf of the Ka‘bah without fear or danger, and the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be conquered.’ I said: ‘Kisra bin Hurmuz?’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Yes, yes, Kisra bin Hurmuz, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will be willing to take it.’ Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Indeed, a woman riding a camel travels alone from Hira and performs tawaf of the Ka‘bah without fear or danger, and the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz have been conquered, and I myself am among those who conquered the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz. And by Him in Whose hand is my soul, the third statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will surely come true, because it was spoken by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim bin ‘Abdullah al-Ta’i al-Kufi radi Allahu anhu was a Companion. His father was famous for his generosity. He (‘Adi) was a Christian by religion; when he came to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he accepted Islam. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to honor him. After the passing of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, when apostasy appeared among the Arabs in various forms, he remained steadfast upon Islam along with his people, and even at that time, he paid the zakat of his people. He was very generous, considered honorable and noble among his people, and was extremely quick-witted. He was present in the conquests of Iraq during the caliphate of Sayyiduna ‘Umar radi Allahu anhu. Then he settled in Kufa and was with Sayyiduna ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu in the Battle of Jamal and the Battle of Siffin. He passed away in Kufa in the year 69 AH, while his age was 120 years.
The mention of the third thing is in the following narration; this will be fulfilled in the time of ‘Isa alayhis salam. Some have considered the era of ‘Umar bin ‘Abd al-‘Aziz as its application.
The wording of the narration in Sahih al-Bukhari (3595) is as follows:
It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim, who says: While I was with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, a man came to him and complained of poverty. Then another came and complained of highway robbery. So he (the Prophet) said: “O ‘Adi, have you seen al-Hirah?” I said: I have not seen it, but I have been informed about it. He said: “If your life is prolonged, you will surely see a woman traveling from al-Hirah until she circumambulates the Ka‘bah, fearing none but Allah.” I said to myself: Where will the bandits of (the tribe of) Tayy’ be at that time, those who have set the lands ablaze? He (the Prophet) said: “If your life is prolonged, you will surely conquer the treasures of Kisra.” I asked: Kisra bin Hurmuz? He said: “Kisra bin Hurmuz. And if your life is prolonged, you will surely see a man coming out with a handful of gold or silver, seeking someone to accept it from him, but he will find no one to accept it from him. And surely, one of you will meet Allah on the Day he meets Him, and there will be no interpreter between him and Allah to translate for him. Allah will say to him: Did I not send a messenger to you who conveyed (the message) to you? He will say: Yes. Then He will say: Did I not give you wealth and favor you? He will say: Yes. Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and he will look to his left and see nothing but Hell.” ‘Adi said: I heard the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: “Protect yourselves from the Fire, even if it be with half a date. If he cannot find even half a date, then with a good word.” ‘Adi said: I saw the woman traveling from al-Hirah until she circumambulated the Ka‘bah, fearing none but Allah, and I was among those who conquered the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz. And if your lives are prolonged, you will surely see what the Prophet Abu al-Qasim sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: a man coming out with a handful (of gold).
We were with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam when a man came and complained to him of hunger, and another came and complained to him of banditry. So the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “‘Adi, have you seen al-Hirah?” I replied: I have not seen that place, but I have been informed about it. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “If your life is prolonged, you will surely see an old woman traveling from al-Hirah until she circumambulates the Ka‘bah, fearing none but Allah.” I said to myself: Where will the bandits of the Tayy’ tribe be at that time, those who have set all the cities ablaze? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “If your life is prolonged, you will surely conquer the treasures of Kisra.” I asked: Kisra bin Hurmuz? He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Yes, (Kisra bin Hurmuz). And if your life is prolonged, you will surely see a man coming out with a handful of gold or silver, seeking someone to accept it, but he will find no one to accept it.” Surely, each of you will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection, and there will be no interpreter between him and Allah to translate his speech. Allah, the Exalted, will say to him: Did I not send a messenger to you who conveyed (the message) to you? He will say: Yes. Then Allah, the Exalted, will say: Did I not grant you wealth and favor you? He will say: Yes. Then he will look to his right and see nothing but Hell, and he will look to his left and see nothing but Hell. ‘Adi radi Allahu anhu says: I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: “Protect yourselves from the Fire, even if it be with half a date; if even that is not possible, then with a good word.” Sayyiduna ‘Adi radi Allahu anhu says: I saw the old woman set out from al-Hirah and circumambulate the Ka‘bah, and she feared none but Allah, and I was among those who conquered the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz. If your lives are prolonged, you will also see what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: a man coming out with a handful of gold.
