It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that we conquered Makkah Mukarramah, then we marched towards Hunayn. On that occasion, the polytheists came with such excellent formation that neither I nor you have ever seen a better formation than that. First, there was a row of horsemen, then a row of foot soldiers, behind them a row of women, behind them a row of goats, and behind them a row of camels. We were also in great numbers, reaching six thousand, and the commanders of our cavalry units on both flanks of the army were Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). Our horses began to seek refuge among our riding camels. After a short while, our horses bolted, and the villagers and those whom we recognized all began to flee. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called out: O Muhajirun! O Muhajirun! Then he called the Ansar and said: O Ansar! O Ansar! Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that this hadith is among those hadiths which my uncle narrated to me, (and Qadi Iyad has written that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that this hadith is among those which many people have narrated to me.) He says that upon the call of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we all responded: O Messenger of Allah! We are present. Then the Messenger of Allah advanced. By Allah! As soon as we reached them, Allah Almighty defeated those enemies. We seized all their wealth, then we set out towards Ta’if. We besieged them for forty days, after which we returned to Makkah Mukarramah. When we arrived, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began giving each man one hundred (camels). The Ansar began to say among themselves that those who fought against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he is giving to them, and those who never fought against him, he is not giving to them! For various reasons regarding the hadith of ‘Ammiyyah, see Sharh al-Nawawi. (Abdullah Rafiq)

When this matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he called the leaders of the Muhajirun and Ansar to him and said: Let no one come to me except the Ansar. We entered the tent, and the tent was filled. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O group of Ansar! What is this matter that has reached me? They said: O Messenger of Allah! What matter has reached you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you not pleased that people go away with wealth, and you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah? They all said: O Messenger of Allah! We are pleased. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then remain pleased with this.
