It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Abdur Rahman Fahri (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battle of Hunayn. We kept marching on a day of intense heat. We took shelter under the shade of trees. When the sun declined, I prepared my weapons, mounted my horse, and set out towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a tent. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you, the time for departure has come. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), who quickly got up from under an acacia tree, its shade was like the shade of a bird. He said: May I be sacrificed for you, I am present. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Saddle my horse. He brought out a saddle, both sides of which were made of palm fiber mesh, in which there was no element of pride or arrogance. So he saddled the horse. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted the horse and we also mounted our own rides. When we stood in ranks facing the enemy in the latter part of the day and all night, both groups made utmost efforts to prevail over their opponents. The Muslims turned back and retreated, as Allah Almighty has mentioned in His Noble Qur’an . The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O servants of Allah! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O group of Muhajireen! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his horse, and the person who was closest to him related that he (peace and blessings be upon him) took a handful of dust and threw it towards their faces and said: These faces have been disgraced and humiliated. Then Allah Almighty routed the disbelievers. Yahya bin Ata narrated to Hammad bin Salamah that the children of the disbelievers narrated from their fathers that they said: The eyes and mouths of each one of us were filled with dust, and we heard a sound between the sky and the earth like the sound produced by dragging iron on an iron plate.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … At the beginning of the battle, there were two reasons for the Muslims’ defeat:
1. The army of Islam was unaware of the hidden enemy; they had just begun to descend when suddenly the enemy rained arrows upon them like a swarm of locusts, then rushed upon each individual. This sudden attack caused panic in the vanguard, and the Muslims present there lost their footing.
2. One Muslim had said that in this battle, due to our small numbers, we will not be defeated, as Allah the Exalted has said: {لَقَدْنَصَرَکُمُاللّٰہُفِیْمَوَاطِنَکَثِیْرَۃٍوَّیَوْمَحُنَیْنٍاِذْاَعْجَبَتْکُمْکَثْرَتُکُمْفَلَمْتُغْنِعَنْکُمْشَیْــــًـاوَّضَاقَتْعَلَیْکُمُالْاَرْضُبِمَارَحُبَتْثُمَّوَلَّیْتُمْمُّدْبِرِیْنَ۔} … Indeed, Allah has helped you on many occasions and [also] on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers pleased you, but they did not avail you at all, and the earth, despite its vastness, became constrained for you; then you turned back, retreating. (Surah At-Tawbah: 25)
Thus, the matter is not as such; the foundation of the Islamic army is reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah the Exalted.
