It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) towards Banu Jadhimah. He went and presented to them the invitation of Islam, but they could not properly say "Aslamna" (We have become Muslims); instead, they said "Saba'na, Saba'na" (We have become Sabians, we have become Sabians). Hearing this, Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) began to kill some of them and take some as prisoners, and he handed over each prisoner to us. When morning came, he ordered us that each of us should kill his own prisoner. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I said, "By Allah! I will not kill my prisoner, nor will any of my companions kill his prisoner." Then, when the Companions came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they mentioned to him what Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) had done. Upon hearing this, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands upwards and said twice: "O Allah! I declare myself free and disassociated from what Khalid has done."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of "saba’na" is to leave one religion and enter into another. The Arabs used to call the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) a "Sabi" because he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) left the religion of the Quraysh and entered into the religion of Islam.

Therefore, these people said "saba’na, saba’na" (we have become Sabi, we have become Sabi) in order to show agreement with the religion of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Their intention was that the religion which Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has adopted, we too are adopting that same religion, but they were not able to use the correct words for this. Sayyiduna Khalid (radi Allahu anhu) understood that they were disparaging Islam and did not realize that they were actually accepting Islam. From what the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, it is understood that Sayyiduna Khalid (radi Allahu anhu) made a mistake.
