It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the people of Makkah and informed them that (the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was about to attack Makkah). But Allah Almighty informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about the woman who was carrying this letter towards Makkah. He sent some companions after her, and the letter was recovered from her hair. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Hatib! Did you really do this?” He replied, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah, I did this not out of deceit or hypocrisy, but I was certain that Allah Almighty would surely grant victory to His Messenger and grant him success. The real matter is that I had come from outside and settled in Makkah. My mother was residing among them. In this way, I wanted to do a favor to the people of Makkah.” Upon hearing this, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Should I not strike off his head?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Would you kill a participant of Badr? Do you not know that Allah Almighty looked upon the people of Badr and said: Now do whatever you wish.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In the mentioned hadith, this incident is described in detail:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, who says: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam sent me, az-Zubair, and al-Miqdad, and said: “Go until you reach Rawdat Khakh, for there is a woman traveler there who has a letter with her; take that letter from her.” So we set out, our horses galloping with us, until we reached the garden, and there indeed was the woman. We said to her: “Hand over the letter.” She said: “I have no letter with me.” We said: “You will surely hand over the letter, or we will strip your clothes.” Upon this, she took the letter out from her hair braid, and we took it and brought it to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In that letter was written: “From Hatib ibn Abi Balta’ah to some of the polytheists in Makkah…” He was informing them of some matters of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O Hatib! What is this?” He said: “Do not be hasty with me (let me explain). The fact is that I was attached to the Quraysh by a pact, and I was not one of them. Those of the Muhajirun who are with you have relatives among the Quraysh, by virtue of which they protect their families in Makkah. When I saw that I had no lineage with the Quraysh, I thought that if I did them a favor, perhaps they would protect my relatives as well (this is why I did this). I did not do this out of disbelief, nor by apostatizing from my religion, nor by preferring disbelief after Islam.” The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, he has spoken the truth to you.” Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu said: “Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite!” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “He was present at Badr, and you do not know—perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and said: ‘Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.’” (Sahih Bukhari: 3007, 4274, 4890; Sahih Muslim: 2494; and the wording is Ahmad’s)

Sayyiduna Hatib radi Allahu anhu had sent news to the people of Makkah about the preparations and arrival of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

In this blessed hadith, a very significant point is mentioned for understanding the status and rank of the noble Companions (Sahabah), and that is: For those Companions for whom the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, by his blessed tongue, has already announced forgiveness in advance, any mistakes they make afterwards should be overlooked. For when Allah Most High was making this announcement of forgiveness, He knew that among these sacred souls, so-and-so would make such a mistake. In reality, Allah’s rules regarding accepting the good deeds of those nurtured in the lap of Prophethood and forgiving their human shortcomings are different from those for other members of the Muslim Ummah. An example is as follows:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al-Khudri radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Do not revile any of my Companions, for if any of you were to spend gold equal to (the mountain of) Uhud, it would not reach the measure of a mudd (about 525 grams) or even half of it (about 262 grams) of what they spent.” (Sahih Bukhari: 3673; Sahih Muslim: 2540)

This is the standard of the good deeds of the Companions: even gold equal to the mountain of Uhud cannot match the small amount of wheat, dates, or barley they gave in charity.

See, Sayyiduna Hatib radi Allahu anhu was revealing such a great secret of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu, taking it very seriously, considered him a hypocrite and deserving of death. But the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam clarified that his forgiveness had already been announced in advance. Subhan Allah. Therefore, those who hold loose tongues or negative opinions about the noble Companions should be cautious and correct their views.
