It is narrated from ‘Iraq, who says: Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah with a group of his people during the days when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was engaged in the Battle of Khaybar, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed Sayyiduna Siba‘ bin ‘Arfatah (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy in Madinah Munawwarah. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When I reached him, he was reciting Kaf Ha Ya ‘Ayn Sad (i.e., Surah Maryam) in the first rak‘ah of the Fajr prayer, and in the second rak‘ah he was reciting “Woe to those who give less” (i.e., Surah Al-Mutaffifin). I said in my heart that so-and-so is ruined; when he measures for himself, he measures fully, and when he measures for others, he gives less. When he finished the prayer, he gave us some provisions for the journey, and we set out for Khaybar, until we reached Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to the Muslims about us, and they included us in their shares of the spoils of war.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … They included us in their shares.

The meaning of these words is contrary to the well-known narration. The well-known narration is that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam included the People of the Ship (Ahl al-Safina) in the shares.

By the People of the Ship (Ahl al-Safina) is meant Sayyiduna Ja‘far radi Allahu anhu and those with him who were in Abyssinia, as is found in Sahih al-Bukhari: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari radi Allahu anhu, who says: We reached the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam when he had already conquered Khaybar, so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam distributed the spoils of war (mal-e-ghanima) for us as well, and did not give any share of the spoils to anyone who had not participated in the conquest besides us. (The next hadith is the same: Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari radi Allahu anhu was with Sayyiduna Ja‘far radi Allahu anhu.)

So then, what is the meaning of the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu that “they included us in their shares”?

Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: The background of the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Musa radi Allahu anhu would be that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam included the People of the Ship (Ashab al-Safina) in the spoils of war without seeking the consent of the warriors who had acquired the spoils, and as for giving a share to Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu and his companions, he sought permission from the Muslims. And Allah knows best. (Abridged from Fath al-Bari: 7/489)
