It is narrated from Basheer bin Yasar that he found some of the Companions of the Messenger mentioning this incident: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, conquered Khaybar and Khaybar became the property of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Muslims, while the Muslims were unable to manage all the work of that land, he entrusted it to the Jews so that they would fulfill its responsibilities and bear its expenses, and in return, they would receive half of its produce. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, divided it into thirty-six portions, each portion consisting of one hundred shares. From the share that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, received from the land of Khaybar, he would distribute half among the Muslims in such a way that there would be shares for the Muslims as well as a share for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The remaining half, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would spend on delegations, other matters, and various incidents and needs of the people.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this hadith it is understood that half of Khaybar was conquered by force and half through a peace treaty. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) distributed the wealth of half of Khaybar, which was conquered by force, among the mujahideen as spoils of war (ghanimah). This included his (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) special share and the khumus (one-fifth portion). As for the wealth obtained from the half that was conquered through a peace treaty, it was dedicated (waqf) for the specific and general interests of the Muslims.
