It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Hudaybiyyah our number was fourteen hundred. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding the hand of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Under the acacia tree, we pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that we would not flee from the battlefield. We did not pledge allegiance to him (peace and blessings be upon him) upon death.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) pledged allegiance (bay‘ah) to the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) even upon death, as will be mentioned in the narrations ahead. Similarly, in some narrations it is mentioned that allegiance was pledged to him (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) upon migration (hijrah), Islam, and jihad as well. And in one hadith, it is stated that the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) pledged allegiance to listen to the words of the caliph, to obey him, and not to seize government or leadership from those who are worthy of it. In another narration, it is mentioned that the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) pledged allegiance to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) upon patience (sabr).
In all these narrations, there is uniformity in meaning and concept; the purport of all the narrations is that they were pledging allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) upon this reality: that they would remain patient, and would not flee in fear of the enemy, but rather would stand firm in the face of the enemy, until either they attained martyrdom or returned successful.
