Fath al-Rabbani

It is narrated from Ja'far bin Amr Dhamri, who says: I went towards Syria in the company of Ubaidullah bin Adi bin Khiyar. When we reached Homs, Ubaidullah said to me: Do you want to see Wahshi bin Harb, the killer of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)? We will ask him about the killing of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: Yes. In those days, Wahshi was residing in Homs. We inquired about him from the people, and we were told that he is right there, in the shade of his palace; his body was as stout as a water-skin. Ja'far says: We went near him and stopped, and we greeted him with salam. He replied to our salam. At that time, Ubaidullah had wrapped his turban well; Wahshi could only see his eyes and feet. Ubaidullah said: Wahshi! Do you recognize me? He looked at him and said: By Allah! No, but I only know that Adi bin Khiyar married Umm Qital, the daughter of Abu Al-Ays, and from her womb, a son was born to him in Mecca. I was looking for a woman to nurse that child. I picked up the child with his mother and handed him over to that woman. Your feet resemble those of that child. After that, Ubaidullah removed the cloth from his face and said: Will you narrate to us the incident of the killing of Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: Yes. Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) killed Tu'aymah bin Adi at Badr. My master Jubair bin Mut'im said to me: If you kill Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) in revenge for my uncle, you will be free. When people set out for battle on the day of Uhud, there is a small mountain near Uhud called Aynayn. There is only a valley between the two. People set out for battle and lined up for fighting. Then Siba' bin Abd Al-Uzza Khuzai came forward and challenged: Is there anyone to face me? Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to face him and said: Are you Siba' bin Umm Anmar? O son of the woman who used to circumcise girls! Have you come to fight against Allah and His Messenger? And saying this, he attacked him. I was lying in ambush behind a rock with the intention of killing Sayyiduna Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him), so that when he passed by me, I could attack him. When he came near me, I struck him on his lower abdomen, and the blow passed through his body. That very blow caused his death. When people returned from the battle, I also returned and stayed in Mecca until Islam spread there as well. Then I left for Ta'if. The people of Ta'if sent a messenger to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said that you do not harm any messenger. I also went with the people to the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he said: Are you Wahshi? I said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you the one who killed Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him)? I said: O Messenger of Allah! That is what has reached you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Can you keep yourself away from me? So I left from there. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and Musaylimah the Liar appeared, claiming prophethood, I thought I would go to Musaylimah and see if I could succeed in killing him, and thus make amends for the killing of Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). So I went out with the people to face Musaylimah. What was destined happened. I saw a man standing in a gap in a wall; he looked like a gray camel, his hair was disheveled. I threw my spear at him, which struck him between his breasts and passed out between his shoulders. Then an Ansari rushed towards him and struck his head with a sword. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that a girl from the roof of a house said: A black slave has killed the Commander of the Faithful, Musaylimah.
