It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that the slain of Badr be thrown into a well, so they were thrown into it. However, Umayyah bin Khalaf had become so swollen inside his armor and was stuck in it, that when the noble Companions pulled him, his limbs separated, so they left him as he was and covered him with stones and earth, thus concealing him. When those slain had been thrown into the well, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood over them and said: "O people of the well! Have you found the promise of your Lord to be true? I have certainly found the promise my Lord made to me to be true." The Companions submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Do you speak to the dead?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These people know that what I promised them, that is, what I said to them, was the truth." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also said that people, while narrating this incident, say that those slain heard your words; I did not say any such thing. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said that these people know this matter.
