It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was reported to him that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered regarding more than twenty chiefs of the Quraysh, and they were thrown into one of the wells of Badr. That well was very filthy and dirty. It was the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that whenever he gained victory over a people, he would stay there for three nights. Similarly, when he was victorious at Badr, he also stayed there for three nights. When the third day came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) ordered his mount to be prepared. Thus, he set out, and the Companions followed him. The Companions say that all of us thought that he was going for some necessary need of his. As he walked, he stopped at the edge of that well and called out to those slain disbelievers of Quraysh, mentioning them by their names and the names of their fathers, and said: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so! Do you now find it pleasing that you had obeyed Allah and His Messenger? Did you find true what your Lord had promised you? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Are you speaking to bodies in which there are no souls? Qatadah narrates that Allah Almighty brought those disbelievers to life for the sake of rebuke, disgrace, and the manifestation of anger.
