Hadith 10676

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that in Makkah, two rak‘ahs of prayer were made obligatory. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah Munawwarah, two more rak‘ahs were added to each prayer, except for Maghrib, because it is the odd prayer of the day, and except for Fajr prayer, because its recitation is lengthy. And it was the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he set out on a journey, he would perform the prayer as he used to do before.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … However, it is established that when the prayer (salah) was made obligatory, the number of obligatory units (rak‘ahs) for Fajr, Dhuhr, ‘Asr, and ‘Isha prayers was two each, and the Maghrib prayer consisted of three units. Then, this number of units was specified for travel (safar), and for residence (hadr), four units were made obligatory for Dhuhr, ‘Asr, and ‘Isha prayers. The number for Fajr and Maghrib remained the same. However, in residence, it is required and recommended to recite at length in the Fajr prayer.
