It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, it was a place afflicted with epidemic and the people were suffering from fever. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill. Whenever his fever intensified, he would say: "Every person wakes up among his family, while death is closer to him than the strap of his sandal." Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that when Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) suffered from severe fever, he would say: "If only I could know whether I will ever spend a single night in that valley, where around me would be the grasses called Idhkhir and Jalil, and whether I will ever reach the springs of Majannah, and whether the mountains called Shamah and Jalil will ever appear before me. O Allah! Curse Utbah bin Rabi’ah, Shaybah bin Rabi’ah, and Umayyah bin Khalaf, for they expelled us from Makkah Mukarramah." When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the distress of these companions, he said: "O Allah! Make Madinah Munawwarah as beloved to us as Makkah Mukarramah, or even more so. And make its climate healthy for us, and bless its Sa’ and Mudd for us, and transfer its fever to Juhfah." Urwah says: The result of this supplication was that any child born in the region of Juhfah would not reach the age of maturity before being struck down by fever.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The fever found in the region of Madinah Munawwarah was well-known, to the extent that during the ‘Umrah of Qada, while the Companions were performing tawaf, the polytheists of Makkah said about them that the fever of Yathrib (Madinah) had weakened them. For this reason, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) ordered them to perform raml (walking briskly with short steps during tawaf). On one hand, the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) naturally felt sorrow at having left their ancestral homeland of Makkah Mukarramah, and on the other hand, they were afflicted by the fever prevalent in the city to which they had come. It was for this reason that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Bilal (radi Allahu anhuma) recited these verses. Then, by the blessing of the Prophet’s (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplication, the Muslims found relief from illnesses and Madinah became beloved to them.
At that time, Juhfah was a center of shirk (polytheism), so the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) supplicated for the fever of Madinah to be transferred to Juhfah, so that those people would remain afflicted by this fever and would not be able to assist the disbelievers and the rebellious. After this supplication, the most fever was found in that region, to the extent that if anyone drank water from the place of Juhfah, he would be stricken with fever.
