It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When I was still a boy, I participated with my uncles in the pact of Mutayyibeen. Even now, if I were to be given the most precious red camels, I would not like to break that pact. Imam Zuhri says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Islam has further strengthened any pact that it found people had made, and now, in Islam, there is no room for such covenants and agreements. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself established brotherhood between the Quraysh and the Ansar.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … After the Battle of Fijar, in the month of Dhu al-Qa‘dah, a pact was established among five tribes, which is called Hilf al-Fudul. The names of these tribes are: Banu Hashim, Banu Muttalib, Banu Asad, Banu Zuhrah, and Banu Taym.

The reason for this was that a man from Zubaid (Yemen) came to Makkah with merchandise. ‘As ibn Wa’il bought goods from him but did not pay the price. He sought help from Banu ‘Abd al-Dar, Banu Makhzum, Banu Jumah, Banu Sahm, and Banu ‘Adi, but they paid no attention. So, he climbed Mount Abu Qubays and, in a few verses of poetry, described his oppression and called out for someone to help him obtain his right. At this, Zubayr ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib made efforts, and thus individuals from the aforementioned tribes gathered at the house of ‘Abd Allah ibn Jud‘an, the chief of Banu Taym, and made a pact among themselves that whoever is seen oppressed in Makkah—whether he is a resident of Makkah or from elsewhere—they would all rise in his support, and they took the right of the man from Zubaid from ‘As ibn Wa’il and returned it to him.

You (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were present at this pact along with your uncles. At that time, you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) were twenty years old, and after being honored with Prophethood, you used to mention this event.

To emphasize this agreement, these individuals filled a tub with perfume, placed it in the Sacred Mosque near the Ka‘bah, dipped their hands in it, and then touched the Ka‘bah with their perfumed hands. For this reason, those who participated in this pact were called al-Mutayyabun (the perfumed ones).

You (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) are praising such agreements and saying that one should not break such pacts for any worldly greed, rather, they should be maintained even in Islam.
