(Second chain) It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of the Nuqaba, he says: We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to fight. Sayyiduna ‘Ubada bin Samit was among those twelve individuals who pledged allegiance at the First ‘Aqaba on those matters upon which women would pledge allegiance. The pledge was that we would listen to and obey the Khalifah in hardship and ease, in pleasure and displeasure, and we would not dispute the authority of those who are worthy of leadership, we would speak the truth wherever it may be, and we would not fear the blame of any blamer in the matter of Allah Almighty.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Among those blessed individuals from outside Makkah who first accepted Islam were the following members of the Khazraj tribe: Sayyiduna As‘ad bin Zurara, Sayyiduna Qutbah bin ‘Amir, Sayyiduna ‘Awf bin Harith, Sayyiduna ‘Uqbah bin ‘Amir, Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin Malik, and Sayyiduna Jabir bin ‘Abdullah.

These people came in the 11th year of Prophethood along with those arriving for Hajj, and while they were conversing at night in the valley of Mina, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed by. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sat with them, and they became Muslim, and they promised to meet the following year at the time of Hajj.

Thus, in accordance with the promise, the next year, in the 12th year of Prophethood, during the Hajj season, twelve men presented themselves—ten from Khazraj and two from Aws. These people gathered with the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the valley of Mina, and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught them about Islam.

Five individuals were those mentioned above, and the remaining were:
Sayyiduna Mu‘adh bin Harith (Mu‘adh bin ‘Afra’), Sayyiduna Dhakwan bin ‘Abd al-Qays, Sayyiduna ‘Ubadah bin Samit, Sayyiduna Yazid bin Tha‘labah, and Sayyiduna ‘Abbas bin ‘Ubadah.

The two men from the Aws tribe were: Sayyiduna Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tihan and Sayyiduna ‘Uwaym bin Sa‘idah (radi Allahu anhuma).

After this, these people returned, and the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Sayyiduna Mus‘ab bin ‘Umayr (radi Allahu anhu) with them, so that he could teach the people the Qur’an and instruct them in the religion.

Thereafter, the second pledge of ‘Aqabah took place the following year, the mention of which is in the next chapter.
