Hadith 10592

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Allah does not sleep, nor does it befit Him to sleep. He lowers the scale for some and raises it for others. His veil is fire. If He were to remove that veil, the radiance and splendor of His Face would burn everything that His gaze reaches. Then Abu Ubaidah, the narrator, recited this verse: When Musa reached there, he was called: Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it, and glorified is Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. (: Surah An-Naml: 8)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This hadith indicates the reality that it is not possible for the creation to see Allah Ta’ala in this world. The ahadith of Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr radi Allahu anhu also indicate the impossibility of seeing (Allah).

The verse recited by the narrator Abu Ubaidah, its full context is as follows:
When Musa (alayhis salam) said to his family, “Indeed, I have seen a fire. Soon I will bring you some news from it, or I will bring you a burning ember from it so that you may warm yourselves.” So when he came to it, he was called: “Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it, and exalted is Allah, Lord of all the worlds. O Musa! Indeed, it is I—Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” (Surah an-Naml: 7, 8, 9)

This is the incident when Musa (alayhis salam) was returning from Madyan with his wife. At night, in the darkness, he did not know the way, and there was also a need for fire to protect from the cold. What Musa (alayhis salam) perceived as fire was actually the location of Mount Tur. When he reached there, he saw flames rising from a green tree. In reality, this was not fire; it was the light (nur) of Allah Ta’ala, whose manifestation appeared like fire.

“Blessed is whoever is in the fire”—by this is meant Allah Ta’ala; by “fire” is meant His light (nur); and by “whoever is around it” is meant Musa (alayhis salam) himself and the angels.

The narrator Abu Ubaidah recited this verse to clarify the content of the blessed hadith, because according to the sacred verse as well, there was light (nur) between Allah Ta’ala and Musa (alayhis salam).
