Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) described to them about the night of Isra: I was lying in the Hatim when a comer, that is, Jibril (peace be upon him), came to me and said to his companion: Among these three, the one lying in the middle is (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him). So he came to me and split me from this place to that place lengthwise. Qatadah says: I asked Jarud, who was sitting beside me, what did he (peace and blessings be upon him) mean by this? He said: From the hollow between the collarbones to the place where the pubic hair grows, the belly was split open. Then my heart was taken out, and a golden tray filled with faith and wisdom was brought to me. Then my heart was washed and filled with faith and wisdom and then returned to its original state. After that, a white animal was brought to me, which seemed smaller than a mule and bigger than a donkey. Jarud, the narrator, said: O Abu Hamzah! Was this animal Buraq? He said: Yes, the step of this animal would reach as far as its sight could go. I (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) was mounted on it, and Jibril (peace be upon him) took me along until he brought me to the lowest heaven and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibril. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, your coming is the best arrival. So the door of the heaven was opened. When I passed through it, I saw Adam (peace be upon him) sitting there. Jibril said: This is your father Adam, greet him. I greeted him, and he replied to my greeting and said: Welcome to the righteous son and righteous Prophet. Then Jibril moved forward and reached the second heaven, and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibril. It was said: And who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, this is the best arrival. Then the door was opened, and when I passed through it, I saw two maternal cousins, Yahya and Isa (peace be upon them), sitting there. Jibril said: These are Yahya and Isa, greet them. So I greeted them, and they replied to my greeting and said: Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet. Then he took me up to the third heaven and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibril. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, your coming is the best arrival. Then the door was opened, and when I passed through it, I saw Yusuf (peace be upon him) sitting there. Jibril said: This is Yusuf (peace be upon him), greet him. So I greeted him, and he replied to my greeting and said: Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet. Then he moved forward until he reached the fourth heaven and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: I am Jibril. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, his coming is the best arrival. So the door was opened. When I entered, I saw Idris (peace be upon him) sitting there. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: This is Idris, greet him. So I greeted him, and he replied to my greeting and then said: Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet. After that, Jibril (peace be upon him) ascended to the fifth heaven and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibril. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, his coming is the best arrival. So the door was opened. When I passed through it, I saw Harun (peace be upon him) sitting there. Jibril said: This is Harun, greet him. So I greeted him, and he replied to my greeting, then he said: Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet. Then they began to ascend until they reached the sixth heaven and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who are you? He said: Jibril. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, his coming is the best arrival. So the door was opened. When I entered, I saw Musa (peace be upon him) sitting there. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: This is Musa, greet him. So I greeted him, and he replied to my greeting and then said: Welcome to the righteous brother and righteous Prophet. When I moved ahead of him, he began to weep. He was asked: Why are you weeping? He said: I am weeping because a man was sent after me, but the majority of his Ummah will enter Paradise compared to my Ummah. Then they moved forward and reached the seventh heaven and asked for the door to be opened. It was said: Who is this? He said: Jibril. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: Has he been sent for? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome, this is the best arrival. So the door was opened. When I passed through it, I saw Ibrahim (peace be upon him) sitting there. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: This is Ibrahim (peace be upon him), greet him. So I greeted him, and he replied to my greeting and said: Welcome to the righteous son and righteous Prophet. Then Sidrat al-Muntaha was raised for me. Its fruit was like the jars of Hajar and its leaves like the ears of elephants. Jibril (peace be upon him) said: This is Sidrat al-Muntaha. There were four rivers there, two hidden and two apparent. I said: O Jibril! What is this? He said: These two hidden rivers are going into Paradise, and these two apparent rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates. Then Bayt al-Ma’mur was raised for me. Imam Hasan al-Basri narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Bayt al-Ma’mur, into which seventy thousand angels enter every day and never return again. Then the narrator returned to the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then a vessel of wine, a vessel of milk, and a vessel of honey were brought to me. I took the milk. He said: This is the natural disposition (fitrah); you and your Ummah are upon fitrah. Then fifty prayers were made obligatory upon me in a day. But when I returned and passed by Musa (peace be upon him), he said: What have you been commanded? I said: I have been commanded to perform fifty prayers in a day. He said: Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to perform fifty prayers. I have tested the people before you, and I have dealt strictly with Bani Israel. Therefore, return to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah. So I returned, and Allah Almighty reduced ten prayers. Then when I returned and passed by Musa (peace be upon him), he said: What have you been commanded? I said: I have been commanded to perform forty prayers in a day. He said: Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to perform forty prayers in a day. I have tested the people before you, and I have dealt strictly with Bani Israel. Therefore, return to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah. So I returned, and Allah Almighty reduced another ten prayers. Then I returned to Musa (peace be upon him), and he said: What have you been commanded? I said: I have been commanded to perform thirty prayers in a day. He said: Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to perform thirty prayers in a day. I have tested the people before you, and I have dealt strictly with Bani Israel. Therefore, return and ask your Lord for a reduction for your Ummah. So I returned, and Allah Almighty reduced another ten prayers. But when I returned to Musa (peace be upon him), he asked the same question: What have you been commanded? I said: Twenty prayers in a day. He again said: Your Ummah will not be able to perform twenty prayers in a day. I have tested the people before you, and I have dealt strictly with Bani Israel. Therefore, return to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah. So I returned, and I was commanded to perform ten prayers in a day. But when I returned to Musa (peace be upon him) and he asked what I had been commanded, I said: Ten prayers in a day. This time again he said: Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to perform ten prayers in a day. I have tested the people before you, and I have dealt strictly with Bani Israel. Therefore, return to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah. So I returned again, and I was commanded to perform five prayers in a day. I returned to Musa (peace be upon him), and he asked: What have you been commanded? I said: I have been commanded to perform five prayers in a day. He again said: Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to perform five prayers in a day. I have tested the people before you, and I have dealt strictly with Bani Israel. Therefore, return to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah. This time I said: I have asked my Lord so many times that I am now ashamed before Him. Now I am content and accept this. So when I moved forward, a caller called out: Indeed, I have established My obligation and have given relief to My servants.
