It is narrated from Sayyiduna Khalid ‘Adwani (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the eastern side of Banu Thaqif, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was standing leaning on a bow or a staff, and they had come to seek help from him. I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting the Surah with {وَالسَّمَائِوَالطَّارِقِ}, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the Surah. I had memorized this Surah even in the time of ignorance, in the state of polytheism, and then after embracing Islam, I learned it again. Banu Thaqif called me and said: What did you hear this man reciting? I recited Surah At-Tariq to them in response, but the Qurayshi people present with them said: We know our companion (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) better; if we knew that his words were true, we would certainly follow him.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Thaqif was related to the Hawazin tribe, and he was the great ancestor of the Banu Thaqif tribe. The dwelling place of this tribe was Ta’if. When the Quraysh inflicted severe harm upon the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam after the death of Abu Talib, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam set out towards Ta’if. Upon arriving there, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to each of the chiefs and spoke with each one, spending ten days in this effort. However, none accepted what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said; rather, they told him to leave their city and incited their children, riffraff, and slaves against him. Thus, when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam intended to return, they lined up on both sides and began to hurl insults and use foul language, then started pelting stones, which caused the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam’s heels and feet to become wounded, and his sandals became soaked with blood. In this journey, the freed slave of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, our master Zayd bin Harithah radi Allahu anhu, was with him, protecting him, and he too received several wounds on his head. This cruelty continued to such an extent that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had to take refuge in a garden belonging to Utbah and Shaybah, the sons of Rabi’ah. The rest will be mentioned in the benefits of the next hadith.
